Iran's IRGC Claims Missile, Drone Strikes on US Bases in Iraq
(MENAFN) Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said Wednesday it launched missile and drone strikes against US military bases in Iraq, claiming the attacks destroyed several American facilities and pieces of equipment.
According to the IRGC, the strikes on US positions in Erbil were carried out in direct response to US attacks conducted overnight. The Guard said the assault destroyed a maintenance center and facilities storing technical equipment, and also disabled the guidance system of a US surveillance balloon stationed at the base.
The IRGC further claimed that fuel storage facilities at the base were set ablaze and that a number of American soldiers were killed in the strikes — claims that have not been independently verified.
The exchange followed an announcement late Tuesday from the US military's Central Command (CENTCOM), which confirmed it had carried out strikes against IRGC targets across Iran. In the aftermath, Iranian media outlets reported hearing explosions on Qeshm Island and in the cities of Bandar Abbas, Sirik, Chabahar and Konarak.
