Four Yemeni Forces Killed in Clashes with Houthis Amid Rising Tensions
(MENAFN) Four members of Yemen's government-aligned National Resistance Forces have been killed in clashes with Houthi fighters, the group's naval forces said Tuesday.
The deaths occurred over the past several days as forces confronted what was described as "terrorist activities by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and its allies in Yemen" — a reference to the Houthis — according to a statement carried by a television channel, which is owned by Presidential Leadership Council member Tareq Saleh, commander of the forces.
The statement said the naval personnel were killed while carrying out their duties, but gave no further details on where or when the fighting took place, or the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
The announcement comes as tensions between Yemen's government forces and the Houthis have escalated in recent weeks, compounding a crisis in a country already grappling with one of the world's most severe humanitarian and economic emergencies.
Yemen had experienced relative calm since 2022, following years of war between government forces and the Houthis, who have held Sanaa and other parts of the country since 2014. A Saudi-led coalition backing Yemen's internationally recognized government supports government forces, while Iran is widely accused of backing the Houthis — who announced a maritime blockade of Saudi Arabia in July.
