Maduro's Son Reveals Story Behind Father's First Post-Detention Photo
(MENAFN) Nicolas Maduro Guerra, son of Venezuela's captured leader Nicolas Maduro, has described the circumstances behind the first photograph released of his father since his detention by the US, saying Maduro intended the image to project strength and defiance.
In a post on X, Maduro Guerra said the photo was taken June 25 — one day after two major earthquakes struck Venezuela — at a time when his father was deeply worried about the disaster's aftermath. He said Maduro had been closely monitoring the situation on television and called his family four or five times that day seeking updates, particularly on conditions in La Guaira.
"According to what he told us at the time, he thought, 'All right, God willing, one day this photo may send the message that I am well, standing strong and resisting,'" Maduro Guerra said.
He added that the person who took the photograph had to persuade a reluctant Maduro to pose, telling him: "Please come. You can send this photo later."
According to Maduro Guerra, printed copies of the photos were mailed on July 13 and arrived at a US address on Aug. 25, after which the family decided how and when to release the image publicly. The photo, along with a message dictated by Maduro himself, was ultimately made public on Aug. 30.
Maduro Guerra said the family would continue pushing for the release of both Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and voiced hope that "good news" would come soon.
Maduro and Flores were detained following a US military intervention in Venezuela on Jan. 3. US authorities have accused Maduro of drug terrorism and cocaine trafficking, among other charges.
