Peru Severs Diplomatic Ties With Iran Amid Middle East Crisis
(MENAFN) Peru has cut diplomatic relations with Iran, its Foreign Ministry announced, as tensions across the Middle East continue to escalate.
Officials cited the country's "historic commitment to peace," alongside its respect for international law and its defense of democratic principles, as the driving forces behind the break.
Lima said it had watched with mounting alarm "the deterioration of democratic values in Iran," pointing to a crackdown on peaceful protests, tightening restrictions on press freedom, systemic discrimination against women and girls, and the targeting of political dissidents within the country.
Peru also flagged growing unease over disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz since March, warning that continued instability there could send shockwaves through global energy markets and supply chains.
The Foreign Ministry further condemned Iran's role in stoking violence and deepening conflict across the region, and criticized Tehran for obstructing inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The rupture comes as military tensions between Iran and the United States flare anew, with an exchange of strikes deepening instability across the Middle East and stoking fresh fears over the safety of Hormuz shipping lanes.
Even as it severs formal diplomatic ties, Peru said consular relations with Iran will continue uninterrupted, ensuring protections for citizens and interests of both nations under the Vienna Conventions.
Lima delivered the decision to Tehran via diplomatic note, routed through Iran's embassy in Ecuador, which handles Iran's diplomatic affairs with Peru.
