Guterres Calls for End to Israeli Strikes in Gaza, Violence in West Bank
(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres calls on Tuesday for an end to Israeli attacks in Gaza and violence by settlers in the occupied West Bank, urging all sides to respect international law and existing agreements.
Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, Guterres stresses that the Gaza ceasefire must be upheld and calls for immediate action to remove barriers preventing humanitarian assistance from reaching those in need.
"In Gaza, the ceasefire must be respected," Guterres said at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit.
The Gaza ceasefire comes into effect last October, but Israeli attacks continue to cause casualties. Gaza’s Health Ministry reports that more than 1,320 Palestinians have been killed and over 4,385 injured since the truce began. The Israeli military offensive launched in October 2023 has killed more than 73,000 people and wounded more than 174,000 others, according to the ministry.
Turning to the occupied West Bank, Guterres condemns ongoing settler violence and the expansion of Israeli settlements, calling for both practices to stop.
The UN reports that violence by settlers has reached "unprecedented levels," documenting more than 1,430 incidents involving casualties or damage to property during 2026 through early August.
Guterres says a lasting resolution to the conflict depends on establishing a two-state solution in which Israel and Palestine exist alongside one another as independent and sovereign states.
"I appeal for maximum restraint and for agreements and international law to be respected," Guterres said.
