British PM Convenes Cabinet Ahead of First Address to Parliament
(MENAFN) British Prime Minister Andy Burnham chairs a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, with domestic matters taking center stage as he prepares to deliver his first address to lawmakers since entering office.
The government’s prisoner early-release policy is among the key issues discussed, amid increasing concerns that the scheme could allow dangerous offenders to leave prison prematurely.
According to reports, the government outlines measures during the meeting to expand prison capacity after Burnham introduces stricter conditions for inmates seeking early release.
On Sunday, Burnham announces that people convicted of unlawful killing, including manslaughter, will be excluded from eligibility for earlier release in England and Wales.
The Conservative Party criticizes the government’s policy, warning that the early-release program could put the public at risk by allowing dangerous prisoners to return to society as authorities attempt to address overcrowding.
The scheme is initially introduced after Britain’s prison system comes close to reaching full capacity in the summer of 2024, when fewer than 100 spaces remain available.
A revised version of the early-release program is scheduled to come into effect on Oct. 1.
