FBI Filing Reaffirms Tinubu Was Subject of US Criminal Investigation
(MENAFN) A sworn FBI declaration filed in a US federal court reaffirms that Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was among the subjects of a criminal investigation conducted by US authorities in the early 1990s.
The declaration is submitted on Aug. 28 to the US District Court for the District of Columbia as part of an ongoing Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) case seeking the release of US law enforcement records connected to Tinubu.
According to the filing, the FBI says the requested documents were “compiled in furtherance” of an investigation involving several individuals suspected of drug-trafficking offenses.
Excerpts from the declaration are made public by a Washington-based lobbying firm that represents former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar. The firm says it has obtained a substantial collection of records from the FBI and is currently reviewing and redacting portions of the material before releasing it publicly.
The new court filing follows an April 2025 decision by US District Judge Beryl Howell, who determines that publicly available Justice Department filings had already formally acknowledged Tinubu as one of the subjects of a criminal investigation involving the FBI, DEA and other agencies.
Following that ruling, the judge directs the FBI and DEA to search for the requested records and process those that are not exempt from disclosure under FOIA.
