NATO Jets Respond to Drone Incursions Near Baltic Airspace
(MENAFN) NATO fighter aircraft are deployed overnight after drones reportedly approach or enter the airspace of Latvia and Estonia, prompting security concerns in the Baltic region.
In Latvia, authorities issue an airspace threat warning in the northeastern Aluksne municipality, leading the NATO Baltic air-policing mission to send fighter jets into action.
Local residents are instructed to stay indoors, shut windows and doors, and follow the “two-wall principle,” which calls for maintaining two walls between themselves and a possible threat.
People are also advised to contact the emergency services at 112 if they notice a low-flying object that appears suspicious or dangerous.
The warning is lifted at 4.17 am local time. Earlier, authorities had issued a lower-level yellow alert in the Ludza municipality over a possible airspace threat, but that warning is subsequently withdrawn.
The latest incidents come after several similar airspace alerts are reported in Latvia’s Latgale and Vidzeme regions during the summer.
Foreign drones have also previously entered Latvian territory, with some crashing and exploding. NATO fighter aircraft have shot down several of the drones during earlier incidents.
