Carney’s Liberal Party Wins Key By-Elections Amid US Trade Dispute
(MENAFN) Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party secures victories in three federal by-elections on Monday, strengthening its position in Parliament as tensions over trade with the United States intensify.
The results return the Liberals to 173 seats in the House of Commons, giving the party the minimum number required for a majority. Carney says the outcome reflects voters’ confidence in his government during a challenging period for the country.
“At this consequential time for Canada, voters have placed their trust in our government's plan,” Carney said.
The Liberals hold on to their seats in Beaches-East York and North Vancouver-Capilano while also taking Chicoutimi-Le Fjord from the Conservatives.
In Quebec, Liberal candidate Daniel Gobeil wins with 51.3% of the vote. Tanveer Shahnawaz and Braeden Caley also secure decisive victories in Ontario and British Columbia, respectively.
Carney says Canada is “being tested in a changing world” and pledges to focus on “building our strength at home” while expanding the country’s trade relationships with international partners.
He also maintains that his administration continues to achieve concrete results despite facing global “headwinds.”
