Kenya Aviation Workers End Strike After Reaching Government Agreement
(MENAFN) Kenyan aviation workers end a two-day strike on Tuesday after reaching an agreement with the government and aviation authorities, bringing an end to disruptions that affected air travel and led to cancellations and delays at several major airports across the country.
The Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) agrees to immediately suspend the industrial action after signing a return-to-work deal with the Transport Ministry, Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) and local airline Jambojet.
“The employees shall resume their respective duties and cooperate with management to ensure the immediate restoration and continuity of normal operations,” the agreement said.
As part of the settlement, KAA agrees to immediately release agency fees collected on behalf of KAWU and currently being held by the authority.
The agreement also allows KAWU and KCAA to restart negotiations over a collective bargaining agreement, with the aviation regulator pledging to respect and implement the eventual outcome.
Workers who took part in the strike are also protected from retaliation under the deal. They cannot face victimization, intimidation, discrimination or disciplinary measures because of their participation in the industrial action.
Meanwhile, a separate legal dispute between KAWU and Jambojet over recognition of the union remains unresolved. Both parties agree to follow the court’s eventual decision in the matter.
