Syria Works to Rebuild European Ties as Denmark Reopens Damascus Embassy
(MENAFN) Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani says Damascus is working to rebuild diplomatic relations with European countries, including Denmark, following Copenhagen’s decision to reopen its embassy in Damascus after a 14-year closure.
During talks in Damascus with Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen, Shaibani discusses ways to expand bilateral relations and strengthen cooperation between the two countries.
“Our foreign policy focuses on restoring relations with all European countries, including Denmark,” Shaibani told a joint press conference with Rasmussen.
He says Syria’s approach has been met with encouraging responses from European governments interested in developing closer relations with Damascus.
“Denmark stood with the Syrian people in difficult moments and continues to support them in the new phase,” Shaibani said.
Shaibani also highlights Denmark’s decision to become the first Scandinavian country to restore a permanent diplomatic mission in Damascus at ambassadorial level.
The Syrian foreign minister says the two sides discuss a proposed partnership agreement designed to establish an institutional framework for cooperation across multiple sectors. He adds that Syria and Denmark plan to conclude a strategic partnership agreement during a future visit by Syrian officials to Denmark.
