Xi Calls for Greater Security Cooperation at SCO Summit

(MENAFN) Chinese President Xi Jinping urges members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to place security at the center of their cooperation and work toward creating conditions for shared security, while criticizing “hegemony, unilateralism, and protectionism.”

Addressing leaders at the SCO summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, Xi stresses the importance of dialogue and consultation among member states. He also calls for reforms to international governance that are fair and orderly, according to reports.

Bishkek hosts the two-day meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of State, which begins Monday as the Eurasian organization marks its 25th anniversary.

Xi’s remarks come as several major conflicts continue to shape the international landscape, including the Russia-Ukraine war, the conflict between the United States and Iran, and the ongoing war in Gaza.

The summit brings together Xi, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are also participating.

“China sees the Shanghai Cooperation Organization as a priority area for high-quality joint construction of the Belt and Road and implementation of the Global Development Initiative,” Xi said.
