Private Schools in Jerusalem Suspend Classes Over Teacher Entry Restrictions
(MENAFN) Palestinian private schools in occupied East Jerusalem, including Christian educational institutions, suspend classes Tuesday as the new academic year begins, protesting Israeli measures that prevent teachers and administrative employees from entering the city.
School administrators announce that teaching will remain halted until further notice after Israeli authorities fail to renew entry permits for numerous staff members from the occupied West Bank. They say classes will restart once permits are renewed for all affected teachers and employees.
Christian schools issue a separate announcement confirming the suspension, stating that more than 70 teachers and staff members from the West Bank are unable to reach their workplaces because their entry permits have not been renewed.
Palestinians residing in the occupied West Bank are required by Israel to obtain special permits to enter occupied East Jerusalem. These restrictions apply to people traveling to the city for employment, education, medical care and religious worship.
The academic year begins Tuesday across Israel and Jerusalem, with approximately 6,000 educational institutions welcoming students. Among them are 1,074 schools and other institutions serving the Arab community, which has around 586,000 enrolled students.
