Austria Offers Vienna As Venue For Ukraine Peace Talks

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) Austria's Chargé d'Affaires and Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Stefan Pretterhofer, made the statement during the UN General Assembly's general debate on the "Situation in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine," an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

"Austria is ready to offer its good offices and host talks in Vienna – on the war in Ukraine and the broader question of the European security architecture," Pretterhofer said.

According to him, the United Nations and the OSCE – both with headquarters in Vienna – could play an important role in the implementation of a ceasefire or a broader peace agreement..

The diplomat called a ceasefire the immediate priority.

"Austria calls for a full, immediate and unconditional ceasefire. It should open the way to negotiations between the parties on a just, lasting and comprehensive peace based on the UN Charter and international law," he said.

Austria also emphasized the inviolability of international law and the sovereignty of states, stressing that it is unacceptable to consider illegal occupation and violations of a country's sovereignty as legitimate means of pursuing politics.

Pretterhofer also drew attention to the humanitarian consequences of the war and called for the return of unlawfully transferred and deported civilians, including children, and for international monitors to be granted access to the temporarily occupied territories.

In his address, the Austrian representative also noted that the humanitarian effects of the war extend far beyond Ukraine. In particular, attacks on Black Sea ports and commercial vessels disrupt agricultural exports. This is driving up global food prices, with the greatest impact on countries least able to cope with such consequences.

The UN General Assembly convened on Tuesday for a debate on the situation in the territories of Ukraine temporarily occupied by Russia.
