We Must Not Allow Ukraine To Be Left Alone With The Aggressor --- Tusk

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said this during commemorative events at Westerplatte in Gdańsk marking the 87th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

“The most important lesson of Westerplatte is that the victim of aggression must never again be left alone,” Tusk stressed.

Tusk emphasized that the main lesson of Westerplatte should be the need for solidarity and the readiness of the free world to confront aggression together.

87 years after the outbreak of World War II, evil has once again found itself on Europe's borders, he said.

“People are dying again - by the thousands and hundreds of thousands. Children are dying under bombs again. And this is happening right next door, in Ukraine,” Tusk stressed.

He urged Western countries to help Ukraine withstand the war against Russia.

“From Westerplatte, we loudly call on the entire free world: stand in solidarity. Today, we must help Ukraine withstand this war. We cannot repeat the mistakes of the past; Munich cannot happen again [a reference to the 1938 Munich Agreement - Ed.]. This ugly, helpless and powerless policy of concessions to evil must not happen again,” the Polish prime minister said.

He stressed that no one can deny the obvious truth that Russia is the aggressor that launched yet another horrific war, and that the West must therefore act decisively.

“It is the responsibility of the entire West to say: Ukraine's fate will soon be our fate as well. Here, at Westerplatte, we must say this out loud: the coming months, this autumn and the winter ahead, could be decisive not only for Ukraine's independence, but also for the security of Poland and the entire free world,” he said.

He also drew a parallel between the isolation of the Polish troops at Westerplatte in 1939 and Ukraine's situation today.

“If we say today, 'it's only Ukraine,' then someone in a few months, a year or two, will again say, 'it's only Poland,'” the Polish prime minister said.

Tusk also stressed that NATO cannot remain an“alliance on paper” and that Europe and the United States must demonstrate genuine solidarity in the face of threats.

The Polish prime minister separately drew attention to Russia's current hybrid activities in Europe. According to him, Poland and a number of other European countries have already faced sabotage, subversive acts and provocations.

“Poland is the victim of many provocations. We most likely had acts of sabotage again several dozen hours ago, arson attacks,” he said.

According to Tusk, Finland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Romania, Denmark and, more recently, Germany have also faced sabotage, subversive acts and provocations.

Tusk called on European countries and the United States to recognize the common nature of this threat.

“It may happen that Germans, French, Italians and Spaniards - all nations without exception and all leaders of the free world - will understand that in the face of evil, no one can be left alone,” the Polish prime minister said.

Tusk also noted that Poland must rely not only on the heroism of its military, but also on its own strength, genuine alliances and the resilience of its society.

Westerplatte is known as one of the symbols of the outbreak of World War II: on September 1, 1939, the German battleship Schleswig-Holstein opened fire on the Polish military garrison on the Westerplatte peninsula in Gdańsk.

As previously reported by Ukrinform, Poland has extended the buffer security zone along the Polish-Belarusian border from September 1 through November 29, 2026.
