Princeton University Press Releases 'Worlds Unfolding' Book

(MENAFN- USA Art News) Princeton University Press has published Worlds Unfolding: Science on the Page, a five-volume collection featuring more than 625 illustrations drawn from the extensive archives of The Huntington in San Marino, California.

The book surveys 12 centuries of global scientific, medical, and technological advancements, from the 10th century to today. It highlights humanity's continuous pursuit of knowledge through research papers, natural history volumes, photographs, and ephemera held by The Huntington Library.

Key images include a 1931 portrait of aviation pioneer Ruth Rowland Nichols next to her Lockheed Vega aircraft. That year, Nichols became the first woman to achieve simultaneous international records in altitude, speed, and long distance. The collection also features Dickenson V. Alley's 1899 double-exposure photograph of Nikola Tesla with an active Tesla coil and Eadweard Muybridge's 1881 early photographs capturing animals and figures in motion, which were groundbreaking in recording the passage of time.

Compiled by Jennifer A. Watts, Daniel Lewis, Joel A. Klein, and Natalie Lawler, the tome explores subjects like human anatomy studies from the 18th century, aeronautic engineering, natural history, electricity, and space. The individual volumes are titled Above, Below, Within, Beyond, and Alive, and are presented in a slipcase.

Engineer and PBS personality Bill Nye wrote the introduction for the publication. A statement from the publisher emphasized that“Across centuries of trial and error, illusion and triumph, the history of science is a continuously unfolding quest.” Worlds Unfolding is scheduled for release on October 10.
