US Launches Strikes On Iran's IRGC Targets After Attacks On Commercial Vessels In Strait Of Hormuz
US Central Command (CENTCOM) said on Tuesday (September 1) that US forces began the strikes at 12 p.m. ET, citing recent attempted attacks by the IRGC against commercial vessels in the strategic waterway as well as against American service members stationed in the region.
“Today at 12 p.m. ET, U.S. forces began striking Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targets in Iran,” CENTCOM said in a post on X.
The command said the strikes followed“recent attempted attacks by the IRGC against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and against American service members deployed to the region.”
Tensions rise around Strait of HormuzThe latest US action comes amid heightened tensions over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy shipments.
Two oil tankers were struck by projectiles near the waterway on Monday, according to maritime reports. The incidents have raised fresh concerns about the safety of commercial shipping through the strait.
The US military has previously carried out strikes against Iranian military assets near the strait, saying its operations were aimed at reducing Iran's ability to threaten international shipping.
The latest strikes mark another escalation in the confrontation between Washington and Tehran, with the US seeking to prevent Iranian forces from rebuilding capabilities that could threaten shipping in the waterway.
