Iran Links Reciprocal Action to US Commitments

(MENAFN) Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian says Tehran is prepared to respond immediately if Washington fulfills its obligations under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.

“I state clearly that if the United States returns to its commitments under the memorandum, the Islamic Republic of Iran will immediately reciprocate,” Pezeshkian said during an address to the 26th summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Bishkek on Tuesday.

Pezeshkian accuses the US of abandoning its commitments less than two weeks after the agreement was signed, saying Tehran responded proportionally to what he described as Washington’s violations.

He says the memorandum follows 40 days of military conflict and nearly three months of negotiations facilitated by Pakistan and Qatar.

According to Pezeshkian, Washington ultimately accepted a ceasefire after failing to accomplish its objectives during the confrontation.

The agreement was reached in June following mediation efforts by Pakistan and Qatar after the Iran-US conflict. It covers the cessation of hostilities, arrangements concerning the Strait of Hormuz and plans for additional negotiations between Tehran and Washington.
