Nepal-China Floods Leave More Than Thousand Dead
(MENAFN) The death toll from devastating flash floods and mudslides across the Himalayan border region between Nepal and China climbs above 1,019 on Tuesday, one week after the disaster struck, according to official figures.
Nepalese authorities report 84 additional fatalities, raising the number of confirmed deaths on the Nepalese side to 1,003. Search operations continue as 3,916 people remain unaccounted for, including 583 foreign nationals.
Among those still missing are 639 workers who were stationed at hydroelectric power facilities in the affected areas.
On the Chinese side, authorities confirm 16 deaths and continue searching for 546 missing people, including 261 foreigners.
Combined figures from both countries put the overall death toll at 1,019, while the number of missing people reaches approximately 4,462, including 844 foreign nationals.
The disaster begins on Aug. 26 after a glacier on Mount Langtang Lirung in Nepal fractures at an elevation of around 5,200 meters. The collapse triggers an ice-and-rock avalanche that develops into a massive debris flow, sending torrents through valleys along the Nepal-China border.
The resulting floods and landslides cause widespread destruction across Nepal, affecting Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Kavre and the Kathmandu Valley. On the Chinese side, the disaster also overwhelms the Gyirong border crossing in southwestern Tibet, also referred to as the Xizang Autonomous Region.
