EU Calls for Iran to Scale Back Military Programs
(MENAFN) The European Union calls on Iran Monday to scale back its nuclear and ballistic missile programs, stop activities the bloc considers destabilizing and end its military assistance to Russia.
Ahead of the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meetings in Asheville, US, on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, the EU also demands that Tehran stop “violence and repression against its own people.”
The bloc stresses that continued diplomatic engagement is needed to achieve a peaceful resolution, restore stability across the region and guarantee “full freedom of navigation and safe transit” through the Strait of Hormuz.
“The EU has adopted extensive sanctions to prevent Iran from exploiting the global economy and financial system to sustain its hostile actions and undermine international security,” the statement said.
The EU says it remains prepared to introduce additional measures if required to protect its security and interests, including maintaining freedom of navigation through the strategically important waterway.
It also welcomes international efforts aimed at encouraging Iran to abandon what the bloc describes as destabilizing activities and participate in peace negotiations “in good faith.” Such efforts could include applying further economic pressure on Tehran.
