Erdogan Hails SCO as 'Rising Star,' Vows Deeper Cooperation
(MENAFN) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Tuesday that Türkiye will work to strengthen ties with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), calling the bloc a "rising star" on the global stage.
"We will strive to advance our cooperation with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, which we see as a rising star, in every field," Erdogan told delegates at the SCO Plus meeting in Bishkek, the Kyrgyz capital.
He emphasized the organization's scale, noting that it represents "3.5 billion people and $35 trillion in gross domestic product," calling it "an indispensable element of a multipolar order."
Erdogan said Türkiye is shouldering responsibility for resolving conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy and pledged to keep working toward peace, tranquility, and stability worldwide.
"We believe that the organization will play a role not only in ensuring peace and stability, but also in establishing secure transportation corridors and ensuring energy supply security," he said.
Climate, connectivity on the agenda
Turning to climate policy, Erdogan noted that Türkiye intends to contribute to combating the effects of climate change and will host the COP31 summit in Antalya on November 11-12.
He also voiced support for aligning the Caspian-crossing Middle Corridor initiative with China's Belt and Road Initiative, stressing the importance Ankara places on cooperation within the SCO framework.
Gaza toll draws sharp criticism
Addressing the situation in Gaza and Lebanon, Erdogan said 74,000 people have been killed in Israeli attacks, warning that the broader region continues to pay the price for what he described as an aggressive policy.
He further stated that "the Mecca Defense Alliance, based on regional ownership and collective deterrence, will make significant contributions to regional and global peace and stability."
