Diphtheria Outbreak Leaves Over Dozen Dead in Nigeria's Plateau State
(MENAFN) At least 15 people have died in Nigeria after contracting diphtheria, a bacterial infection that primarily targets the respiratory system, a health official confirmed Tuesday.
The fatalities were all recorded within a three-day span since the outbreak began, district health official Baks Bulus told media.
According to Bulus, at least 117 additional cases have been confirmed in the Jos North Local Government Area of north-central Plateau State.
He characterized the situation as alarming and cautioned that further cases are likely as health authorities continue monitoring affected communities.
Diphtheria spreads through close contact with infected individuals. "For someone who is infected, those that are close contacts and share utensils and other things like towels that are used at home with such an individual are likely to be infected," Bulus said.
Despite its severity, diphtheria remains a vaccine-preventable disease.
The outbreak comes just a week after more than 30 children died in Kano State, in northwestern Nigeria, amid a suspected diphtheria outbreak there.
Nigeria has faced repeated diphtheria outbreaks in recent years, pushing health authorities to launch vaccination campaigns across the states and communities hit hardest by the disease.
