Lithuania Maintains Security Stance After Reported CIA Visit
(MENAFN) Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda says the country’s security environment remains unchanged following a reported visit by CIA Director John Ratcliffe to Moscow.
Reports last week indicate that Ratcliffe met with Russian officials in an effort to discourage Moscow from launching attacks against NATO members. The CIA does not comment on the reported meeting.
Nauseda says Lithuania was notified beforehand about the discussions and continues to receive updates from its allies regarding the meeting.
“At this moment, I can say that the meeting addressed the goals that had been set. The meeting was aimed at reducing tensions in the region. I very much hope that this message reached the Kremlin regime at the right time,” he said.
The Lithuanian president emphasizes that the reported talks do not affect the country’s preparations for potential security threats.
“I generally think that a little too much attention is being paid to this meeting,” he said.
While Nauseda acknowledges that direct contact of this kind is unusual and carries significance, he says it does not change the wider security picture facing Lithuania.
“The overall security situation is tense, and nobody intends to deny that. Has it increased dramatically recently? I would disagree with that,” he said.
