Trump Urges Apple to Rename Lake Ontario on Its Maps
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump asks Apple to change the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America” on its digital mapping service, according to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum.
“The president reached out to Apple directly, so I'm sure that we may be seeing that change coming up soon,” Burgum said.
Apple has not immediately responded to the remarks.
Trump’s request follows an executive order he signs on Aug. 27 instructing US federal agencies to use “Lake America” as the official name for the lake shared by New York and the Canadian province of Ontario.
The naming dispute emerges as tensions between Washington and Ottawa intensify, with the US imposing 50% tariffs on several major Canadian goods amid an escalating trade conflict.
Google has already adopted a location-based approach to the naming issue on its Maps platform. Users in the United States see “Lake America,” while those in Canada continue to see “Lake Ontario.” People accessing the service from other countries are shown both names.
Trump also pursues a similar renaming effort shortly after returning to the White House for his second term, directing US federal agencies in January 2025 to refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.”
