Nepal Requests Advanced Equipment as Flood Disaster Toll Rises
(MENAFN) Nepal is asking international partners for specialized equipment and technical assistance as rescue and recovery efforts continue following devastating flash floods and landslides in the Himalayan region.
The government is seeking freezers, DNA testing kits, remote-sensing technology and drones to help identify victims, document affected areas and support recovery operations, according to officials.
Nepal has requested freezers, DNA testing equipment and LiDAR technology from the United States, while seeking assistance with identifying disaster victims from Singapore. Bailey bridges and high-capacity drones are also being requested from China and Singapore to assist teams working in areas damaged by the disaster.
The government has already received airtight bags for handling and preserving bodies, with additional supplies expected to arrive soon. "more are also being delivered."
The disaster begins on Aug. 26 when a glacier on Mount Langtang Lirung fractures at an elevation of roughly 5,200 meters. The event triggers an ice-and-rock avalanche that develops into a powerful debris flow, sending huge volumes of water, mud and rock through valleys near the border.
The resulting floods and landslides cause widespread destruction across Nepal, affecting Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Kavre and the Kathmandu Valley. The disaster also extends across the border, burying the Gyirong area in China's Tibet region.
