Türkiye to Debut Deposit-Return Recycling System at COP31
(MENAFN) Türkiye is preparing to present its homegrown Deposit-Refund System (DOA) to an international audience at the 31st Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP31), set to take place in the southern city of Antalya.
According to information obtained by media from the Turkish Environment Agency, operating under the Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Ministry, preparations are underway to introduce the country's digital, traceable deposit-management model on the global stage.
Work is also continuing to roll out the DOA system nationwide as part of Türkiye's broader Zero Waste initiative.
Under current plans, Deposit Return Machines will be installed at COP31 venues and in high-traffic areas across Antalya for the duration of the summit, giving international attendees a chance to try the system themselves. Türkiye is looking to use the conference as a platform to spotlight its Zero Waste initiative, recycling infrastructure and deposit-management technology to a global audience.
Target: 20 billion containers recycled annually
Once fully operational, the DOA system is expected to bring roughly 25 billion beverage containers consumed annually in Türkiye under the deposit-return scheme. With a collection target of 80%, around 20 billion containers are projected to be recovered for recycling each year.
Countries that already run deposit-return systems typically see collection and recycling rates of 80%-90% or higher, and Türkiye aims to eventually surpass its own 80% benchmark as the program expands nationwide.
Nearly $1 billion in projected annual economic impact
At full capacity, the system is projected to cut raw material imports by 35%-40% and add close to $1 billion a year to the Turkish economy.
By scaling up domestic production of Deposit Return Machines alongside field operations and recycling infrastructure, Türkiye is positioning itself to become a developer and exporter of deposit-management technology in its own right.
