Brussels Keeps Yellow Drought Alert as Soil Remains Dry
(MENAFN) Authorities in Belgium's Brussels Capital Region said Monday they will keep the yellow drought alert in place, as recent rain has not been enough to restore soil moisture or water reserves.
The regional drought task force convened Monday under the water policy coordination platform led by Brussels Environment, bringing together water operators, stakeholders and officials responsible for prevention, safety and crisis management, a French-language broadcaster reported.
Following the meeting, officials opted to keep the region in the vigilance phase, according to the report.
Brussels Environment said recent rainfall and cooler temperatures had brought a modest improvement but not enough to normalize conditions. "The rainfall of recent weeks has not been sufficient to normalize the situation, either in terms of the soil, which remains dry, or the water resources," the agency said.
It added that continued vigilance is warranted, noting that the Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium is forecasting drier weather starting Tuesday.
Under the yellow alert, restrictions introduced more than a month ago will stay in force. Authorities are again urging residents to use tap water responsibly as concerns over water resources persist.
