NATO Espionage Case: Court Rejects Bid for Release
(MENAFN) A Belgian court on Monday ordered a one-month extension of pre-trial detention for a Canadian woman of Chinese origin suspected of spying while interning at NATO's military headquarters in Mons.
The Chamber of Indictments handed down the ruling after considering the suspect's appeal against an earlier decision from the pre-trial chamber, according to a written statement from Belgium's Federal Public Prosecutor's Office.
She remains in custody as part of a federal judicial probe into suspected espionage activity.
The woman was taken into custody after security personnel at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) — NATO's military headquarters in Mons — flagged her, Belgian media reported in July.
The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office said investigators are examining suspected "espionage in favour of a third country" and "participation in a criminal organisation."
