Port Officials Face Action After Kyrenia Ferry Capsizes
(MENAFN) Authorities in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus suspend port officials responsible for approving the departure of a passenger ferry that capsizes off the coast of Kyrenia on Sunday, according to Prime Minister Unal Ustel.
Ustel says search and rescue teams continue efforts to locate 18 people who remain missing following the accident.
He says finding the missing passengers is the government's immediate priority, while a Turkish Navy Underwater Offense (SAT) team dispatched from Türkiye joins the ongoing rescue operation.
The prime minister stresses that any negligence linked to the incident will be thoroughly investigated and that those found responsible will face legal consequences.
He also says authorities will examine all possible failures, mistakes and responsibilities surrounding the ferry's voyage.
“The relevant port officials who authorized the ship's departure have also been suspended from duty, an investigation has been launched against them, and new officials have been appointed in their place,” Ustel said.
