Saudi, Pakistani Defense Chiefs Meet in Istanbul on Mecca Pact
(MENAFN) Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman and Pakistan's army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, met Monday to discuss deepening defense ties between the two nations, along with wider regional developments.
The talks took place in Istanbul on the margins of the first session of the Strategic Political and Defense Committee, a body created under the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement.
According to Saudi media, the two officials examined "prospects for military and defense cooperation between the two brotherly countries." The agency added that they also touched on "regional developments and the efforts being made in response to them."
Türkiye is hosting the committee's inaugural meeting, convened to set the strategic course for implementing the agreement. The committee unites the foreign ministers, defense ministers and military chiefs of staff of Türkiye, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
The underlying pact — the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement — was signed Aug. 7 in Mecca by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
