DR Congo Ebola Outbreak Surpasses Six Thousand Cases
(MENAFN) Confirmed Ebola infections in the Democratic Republic of Congo rise above 6,000 as health authorities step up measures to contain the ongoing outbreak.
The Health Ministry reports 6,041 confirmed cases and 2,911 deaths since the outbreak is declared in mid-May.
At least 1,366 patients recover from the disease, while another 619 remain in isolation or receive treatment in hospitals.
The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo virus, becomes the world's second-largest Ebola outbreak in terms of recorded infections, according to the World Health Organization.
The disease spreads across 60 health zones in six provinces: Haut-Uele, Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Bas-Uele and Tshopo.
Response operations remain focused on locations where active transmission continues, with particular attention directed toward Ituri, which records the largest share of infections and affected health zones.
The rapid rise in infections and the expansion of the outbreak into additional areas over the past three months represent a “substantial increase” in its overall scale, according to the WHO.
As containment efforts continue, the government launches an Ebola vaccination campaign aimed primarily at healthcare personnel and other frontline workers.
