EU Places ChatGPT, Reddit, Roblox Under Stricter Digital Rules
(MENAFN) The European Commission places ChatGPT, Reddit and Roblox under a stricter regulatory framework on Monday by officially classifying them as very large digital services under the European Union’s Digital Services Act.
ChatGPT is classified as a Very Large Online Search Engine (VLOSE), while Reddit and Roblox receive Very Large Online Platform (VLOP) status, according to the Commission.
All three services report an average of at least 45 million monthly users across the EU, allowing them to meet the user threshold required for the new designations.
The companies now have four months, with the compliance deadline set for the end of December 2026, to meet the additional requirements imposed under the DSA.
Among the new responsibilities is the need to identify and reduce systemic risks associated with illegal content, the protection of minors, users’ physical and mental well-being, fundamental rights, electoral processes and public security.
The Commission also gains additional investigative authority under the designations, allowing it to examine how the services operate and investigate their relevant features and systems when necessary.
Oversight will be carried out by the European Commission in cooperation with national regulators. Ireland’s Coimisiún na Meán will assist with supervision of ChatGPT and Reddit, while the Netherlands’ Authority for Consumers and Markets will work with the Commission on monitoring Roblox.
