US Eyes Limited Strikes to Stop Iran's Hormuz Rebuild
(MENAFN) The United States is considering carrying out targeted military strikes in the Strait of Hormuz aimed at preventing Iran from rebuilding radar and missile systems capable of threatening commercial shipping, an American news outlet reported Monday.
Citing three American officials, the news outlet said US Central Command drew up the proposal over the past week, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth throwing his support behind it.
According to the report, President Trump had not signed off on the plan before the weekend's exchange of fire with Iran — though officials indicated that could shift in light of the fresh escalation.
One official said the goal is to lower the risk of Iranian attacks on oil tankers, US Navy vessels, and Air Force aircraft operating in the strait, likening the strategy to an effort "to mow the lawn."
A White House official told the news outlet: "The President retains all options at his disposal. The Iranians want to make a deal, but they are always a day late and a dollar short."
Officials pointed to a recent episode in which Iran launched an anti-aircraft missile toward a US F-35 fighter jet escorting vessels through the strait, an incident that heightened concern over Tehran's evolving military capabilities.
They also noted that Sunday's Iranian missile strikes on US bases in Jordan — launched in response to an earlier US strike on Iranian troops — could weigh heavily on Trump's next move.
Trump, for his part, told Fox News that the US would "hit them hard" in response.
