Iraq Seizes USD10M, 35 Properties in Oil Ministry Corruption Probe
(MENAFN) Iraqi authorities have confiscated roughly $10 million in cash, 35 properties, and six vehicles as part of a widening corruption probe tied to a former senior oil ministry aide, the Supreme Judicial Council announced Monday.
According to a council statement, an investigating judge at Baghdad's Central Criminal Court for Combating Corruption confirmed that officials recovered 7 billion Iraqi dinars — roughly $5.3 million — alongside an additional $5.5 million in US dollars from defendant Alaa Mohsen Khalaf.
Khalaf headed the office of Adnan al-Jumaili, Iraq's former deputy oil minister for refining affairs, who is himself in custody on separate allegations of misusing public funds, the statement noted.
The judge said the properties and vehicles seized were registered to Khalaf, and stressed that the case remains under active investigation.
The asset seizures form part of a sweeping anti-corruption drive that Iraq's government launched on June 28 in partnership with the Supreme Judicial Council, aimed at tracking down offenders and clawing back misappropriated public money.
Investigators have leaned heavily on testimony from al-Jumaili, who was removed from his post in June following accusations that he squandered public funds and issued contracts in breach of the law.
Since the crackdown began, dozens of sitting and former government officials, parliamentarians, and business figures — several tied to the oil industry — have been taken into custody. Simultaneous raids across Baghdad and multiple provinces have yielded further seizures of cash, real estate, and other assets connected to ongoing corruption cases.
