Tanker Hit by Mystery Projectiles Near Strait of Hormuz
(MENAFN) A tanker was struck by three unidentified projectiles early Tuesday while making its way out of the Strait of Hormuz off the coast of Oman, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported.
The strike occurred roughly 17 nautical miles (31 kilometers/20 miles) east of Khasab, as the vessel was finishing its outbound passage through the strait, according to UKMTO.
No injuries, deaths, or environmental damage have been reported so far.
An investigation into the attack is now underway, and UKMTO has urged ships operating in the area to proceed with heightened caution and flag any suspicious activity they encounter.
The assault adds to a wave of escalating tensions across the region following US strikes over the weekend on Iran's Larak Island, situated near the Strait of Hormuz, which were met with retaliatory Iranian attacks on sites housing US forces in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates.
