Grand Canyon Flash Floods Kill 2, 14 Still Missing
(MENAFN) At least two people have died and 14 others remain unaccounted for following catastrophic flash flooding through the Grand Canyon's inner corridors, the US National Park Service reported.
"Recovery operations have been completed for a 46-year-old male near Crystal Rapids along the Colorado River," the agency said Sunday, noting that the medical examiner's office of Arizona's Coconino County was on site. No further details about the victim were released.
On Monday, search teams recovered a second body while continuing their search for 14 people who "may be missing or unaccounted" for after the flood tore through the national park over the weekend. According to media, the National Park Service confirmed the body was recovered from a flooded area, raising the confirmed death toll to two.
Search operations remain underway in the remote Bright Angel Canyon and Phantom Ranch areas along the Colorado River.
Saturday's flood surge destroyed nearly every footbridge crossing Bright Angel Creek — a major tributary of the Colorado River — and inflicted severe damage on the Transcanyon Waterline, the park's primary water supply system. The resulting shortage has prompted officials to impose Stage 4 water restrictions on the South Rim beginning at noon Monday.
The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for the region, with forecasters predicting a 90% chance of rain and thunderstorms Monday.
As of Sunday morning, emergency crews had successfully evacuated 62 people from Phantom Ranch and the lower North Kaibab Trail.
