US Strengthens Iraq Ties With USD800M Helicopter Sale
(MENAFN) The US State Department announced Monday it has approved a potential $800 million foreign military sale to Iraq, centered on Bell 412EPX and Bell 407M helicopters along with associated equipment.
The proposed arms package encompasses the helicopters themselves, GAU-19 three-barrel machine guns, rocket systems, electro-optical and infrared sensors, missile launch detection systems, radios, spare parts and ground support equipment.
Beyond the hardware, the deal would also include pilot and maintenance training, alongside engineering, technical and logistics support delivered by both US government personnel and private contractors, according to a State Department statement.
Officials said the sale aligns with broader US foreign policy and national security goals by bolstering the military capabilities of a key strategic partner in the region.
According to the department, the equipment is designed to strengthen Iraq's ability to counter both existing and emerging threats, with particular emphasis on upgrading its rotary-wing transport capacity, reconnaissance operations and air-to-surface targeting precision.
