NC Teen Charged with Murder for Livestreaming Deadly Mosque Attack
(MENAFN) A 17-year-old girl from North Carolina has been charged with murder by aiding and abetting after she allegedly livestreamed a May shooting that left three people dead at a San Diego, California mosque and circulated the gunmen's white supremacist writings, a local prosecutor announced.
The teenager, whose identity has not been released, was taken into custody last week and formally indicted by a grand jury on Monday, just as the new school year was getting underway.
"The thought of her going back to school or with the weekend approaching, holy days approaching, we didn't know what she was capable of," said Forsyth County District Attorney Jim O'Neill, referencing the upcoming Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah, which begins Sept. 11. Investigators say the attackers had also been plotting to strike a synagogue.
Explaining the legal basis for the charge, O'Neill noted that under North Carolina law, "a person who aids and abets another to commit a crime is guilty of that crime ... just as if he or she had personally done all of the acts necessary to constitute the crime."
The gunmen have been identified as Cain Clark, 17, and Caleb Vazquez, 18. The pair opened fire at the Islamic Center of San Diego on May 18 before a security guard returned fire and triggered a lockdown that authorities credit with saving roughly 140 children inside the building.
According to police, the attackers killed the guard, Amin Abdullah, along with Mansour Kaziha and Nader Awad, before turning their weapons on themselves inside a nearby vehicle.
O'Neill said the entire attack was broadcast live via GoPro cameras the gunmen wore during the assault.
"Their plan that day was to commit mass murders not only at the mosque but to follow up at a local Jewish temple and finally at a predominantly African American high school there in town," he said.
