Flash Floods Kill One, Leave Fifteen Missing in Grand Canyon
(MENAFN) At least one person dies and 15 others remain missing after powerful flash floods sweep through remote inner sections of the Grand Canyon, according to the US National Park Service.
"Recovery operations have been completed for a 46-year-old male near Crystal Rapids along the Colorado River," the agency said Sunday evening.
The Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office is present at the site, although authorities do not immediately release further information about the victim.
Officials revise the number of missing people down to 15 from an earlier estimate of 20 as search teams continue operations around Bright Angel Canyon and Phantom Ranch. Both areas are isolated sections of the park located along the Colorado River.
The severe flooding on Saturday causes extensive destruction, washing away nearly all of the footbridges crossing Bright Angel Creek, an important tributary of the Colorado River.
The floods also cause major damage to the Transcanyon Waterline, the main infrastructure responsible for supplying water to the park. With water supplies now critically limited, authorities plan to introduce Stage 4 water restrictions on the South Rim beginning at noon Monday.
