EU Checks Suspected Russian-Linked Tanker in Mediterranean

(MENAFN) European Union forces board an oil tanker suspected of being part of Russia’s shadow fleet in the Mediterranean to verify its registration and flag, according to the bloc’s foreign policy chief.

Kaja Kallas says the MV SUN is boarded Sunday by personnel from the EU's Mediterranean naval operation, Operation IRINI, following suspicions that the vessel is operating under a false flag in breach of international maritime regulations.

“Illegal oil sales from shadow fleet ships are a critical lifeline for Russia’s war in Ukraine, and we’ll continue to cut them off,” Kallas said on the US social media company X.

Kallas says the operation marks the sixth time in recent months that EU forces have boarded a vessel suspected of being connected to Russia’s shadow fleet.

The EU's measures against vessels believed to be involved in Russia's shadow oil trade are also expected to feature in discussions among EU defense ministers when they meet in Ireland on Tuesday, according to Kallas.
