Moscow Accuses EU of Seeking to Undermine Russia’s Elections
(MENAFN) Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) claims that European Union countries are preparing measures intended to interfere with and discredit Russia’s upcoming elections.
In a statement issued ahead of the September vote, the intelligence agency accuses European governments of pursuing what it describes as a broader campaign to destabilize Russia, interfere with the electoral process and cast doubt on the legitimacy of the results.
The SVR alleges that European nations have urged Ukraine to step up attacks against targets inside Russian territory while also considering potential cyberattacks targeting election-related infrastructure.
The agency further claims that European governments are cooperating with Russian opposition figures based outside the country to encourage voters to boycott the elections and dispute the outcome once voting concludes.
The Russian intelligence service also alleges that the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the European Parliament may be preparing statements that reject the election results, potentially citing alleged irregularities in the organization and conduct of the vote.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, responding to the allegations, says Russia has considerable experience dealing with what it describes as foreign attempts to interfere in its electoral processes.
