Nepal Headteacher Acts Quickly to Protect Students from Flood
(MENAFN) A school principal in Nepal helps hundreds of students escape to safety after ordering an immediate evacuation just minutes before powerful floodwaters sweep into the school grounds.
The latest figures released Monday show that floods and landslides along the Nepal-China border have killed at least 919 people, while another 4,793 remain missing, including 853 foreign nationals.
Rajendra Dawadi, headteacher of Tribhuvan Trishuli Secondary School in Nuwakot, receives four separate warnings at around 9.10 am local time (0325GMT) that floodwaters are rapidly approaching.
Dawadi responds by instructing students to leave the school immediately and head toward higher ground. Buses transporting pupils are also ordered to turn back rather than continue toward the school.
“If we didn't make a quick decision, if it were 10 minutes later, we all, including the students and me, wouldn't be able to speak to you today,” Dawadi said.
Around 900 students are believed to have been evacuated successfully following the decision.
Dawadi says multiple warnings from people in the area persuaded him that there was no time to delay the evacuation. His decision is further reinforced when a parent arrives at the school to collect her daughter after receiving reports that a major flood was approaching.
Among those who escape is 16-year-old Yunisha Amatya, who says she and her friends make their way uphill using a narrow path located behind the school.
