Scottish Greens Push Government to Strengthen Measures Against Israel
(MENAFN) The Scottish Greens are urging First Minister John Swinney to introduce stronger boycott and sanctions measures against Israel as part of the Scottish government's upcoming Programme for Government.
Scottish Greens MSP Patrick Harvie says the new government program should include concrete steps aimed at ending Scotland's involvement in what the party describes as abuses against Palestinians.
“The Programme for Government must be the moment that changes. We need clear commitments and a plan to end Scotland’s complicity in the systemic abuse of Palestinians,” Harvie said.
The demands follow repeated calls from the Scottish Greens for Swinney's government to terminate contracts with companies identified by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk as participating in Israeli settlement activities in the occupied West Bank.
The party is also seeking expanded authority for Scottish local governments to support the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement. This would require repealing an older UK law dating from the era of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher that restricts public procurement decisions based on the geographic origin of goods or companies.
Harvie argues that the Scottish government has not gone far enough in translating its stated position into concrete policies, claiming that its response has largely amounted to minimal action and has shown “little evidence of meaningful change” on the issue.
“If a company is profiting from apartheid and genocide, the Scottish Government must use every power it has to ensure it is not also profiting from public money here in Scotland,” he said.
