UK Conservatives Raise Concerns Over Early Prisoner Releases
(MENAFN) The UK's Conservative Party warns that the government's efforts to reduce prison overcrowding could lead to the release of other high-risk offenders under an early-release program.
Conservative shadow justice secretary Nick Timothy criticizes Prime Minister Andy Burnham's approach, arguing that measures designed to prevent certain dangerous criminals from being released could instead result in other potentially dangerous prisoners leaving prison early.
"In order to prevent one group of dangerous criminals being released early, he's looking at releasing a different group of dangerous prisoners," Timothy told the BBC.
The early-release program is introduced after Britain's prison system approaches its maximum capacity during the summer of 2024, when fewer than 100 spaces remain available.
A revised version of the scheme is scheduled to come into force on Oct. 1, with the government seeking to reduce pressure on overcrowded prisons.
Burnham announces Sunday that the rules will be tightened further, excluding prisoners convicted of a range of serious crimes. The exclusions include manslaughter, historical child sexual offenses, causing or allowing the death of a child and killing an emergency worker while they are carrying out their duties.
"The truth is I wanted to go even further. But I've pushed the system to the very limits of what's possible without risking the prison system collapsing within months," Burnham said in a statement.
