Türkiye, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia Begin Joint Defense Committee Talks
(MENAFN) The first session of the Strategic Political and Defense Committee, created under the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement, begins in Istanbul on Monday as Türkiye, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia move toward closer strategic and military cooperation.
Türkiye hosts the committee's inaugural meeting, which is designed to establish strategic guidance for implementing the agreement. The body brings together the foreign and defense ministers as well as the chiefs of general staff from all three countries.
The meeting opens after a group photograph, with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, National Defense Minister Yasar Guler and Chief of General Staff Gen. Selcuk Bayraktaroglu representing Türkiye. Pakistan is represented by Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Federal Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir. Saudi Arabia's delegation includes Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman and Chief of General Staff Gen. Fayyadh bin Hamed Al-Ruwaili.
Discussions are expected to cover a broad range of security and defense matters, including international security developments and ways to strengthen the military capabilities of the three countries.
The participants are also expected to explore greater coordination between their armed forces, expanded cooperation in the defense industry, joint manufacturing projects and collaborative research and development. Strengthening collective efforts to address terrorism is also among the issues on the agenda.
The committee is further expected to establish the structure of its Secretariat and other mechanisms responsible for coordinating projects and activities identified by the group. It will also work on a roadmap outlining the next stages of cooperation under the agreement.
