Japan Expands Military Buildup with Record Defense Budget Request
(MENAFN) Japan's Defense Ministry requests a record 8.9 trillion yen ($56 billion) for the 2027 fiscal year as Tokyo moves ahead with plans to strengthen its military capabilities and prepares to introduce a new defense buildup strategy later this year.
The proposed funding, covering the fiscal year starting next April, represents an increase of 0.9% from the initial defense allocation for the current fiscal year, according to figures released Monday.
The ministry places a strong focus on emerging and advanced military technologies, with priorities including unmanned systems, artificial intelligence, long-range weapons, integrated air and missile defense, space capabilities and cybersecurity.
Around $1.8 billion of the requested funds would go toward acquiring 17 MQ-9B SeaGuardian unmanned aircraft. The drones are expected to improve Japan's ability to monitor maritime activity, particularly across the Pacific.
The proposal also allocates approximately $1 billion for hypersonic missiles and related ground-based equipment. Additional funding is sought for long-range strike systems as Tokyo works to reinforce its deterrence and counterstrike capabilities.
Officials plan to increase reliance on unmanned platforms for missions such as surveillance, targeting and attacks. The approach is intended to reduce the exposure of military personnel to danger while also improving operational efficiency and lowering costs.
Artificial intelligence is also expected to play a larger role in Japan's defense operations. The technology would support the collection and analysis of military data, helping accelerate target identification, improve battlefield awareness and assist commanders with operational decisions.
