Mount Sinabung Erupts, Sends Ash High Into Indonesian Sky
(MENAFN) Mount Sinabung in Indonesia's North Sumatra province erupts on Monday, releasing a large plume of volcanic ash that rises around 3,500 meters (11,480 feet) above the volcano.
The eruption takes place at approximately 10.17 am local time (0317GMT), with a dense, dark ash cloud moving toward the east and southeast, according to reports citing observations from the Sinabung Volcano Observation Post.
Seismic activity linked to the eruption reaches a peak amplitude of 120 millimeters and continues for more than an hour.
Volcanic ash spreads across nearby areas, reaching Berastagi, a tourist destination in Karo Regency.
Authorities in Kuta Gugung village call on residents and visitors near Lake Lau Kawar to move away from the immediate area. Protective face masks are also handed out to help limit people's exposure to the ash.
Officials encourage the public to stay calm while remaining alert as additional ashfall remains possible.
No deaths, injuries or infrastructure damage are immediately reported following the eruption.
