The national selection team wrapped up its participation at the Peru President's Cup with three bronze medals, courtesy of standout performances from junior and cadet athletes Sebastián Astúa, Kevin Hu, and Felipe Chavarría.

The President's Cup stands as the second most prestigious tournament in the Americas within the Costa Rican competitive calendar. The event awards 30 points toward the international rankings (compared to 40 points for the Pan American Championship ), making it a crucial fixture for elite development.

The Medal Breakdown

The three podium finishes were secured after rigorous combat brackets in the junior and cadet divisions:

  • Sebastián Astúa (-48 kg Junior | Bronze): Astúa fought through four intense matches to earn his spot on the podium. He opened with back-to-back 2-0 victories over local Peruvian contenders before edging out Puerto Rico 2-1 in a tight quarterfinal. He fell 2-1 in a hard-fought semifinal against Mexico.
  • Kevin Hu (-57 kg Cadet | Bronze): Hu cruised into the semifinals with two dominant 2-0 victories. In the round of four, he fought valiantly against a top Mexican representative, dropping a close 2-1 decision to secure the bronze.
  • Felipe Chavarría (-45 kg Cadet | Bronze): Chavarría went on an impressive run, winning his first three matches without dropping a single round (2-0 against opponents from Peru, the United States, and Mexico). His campaign ended in the semifinals with a narrow 2-1 loss to Mexico.
