Delhi Govt Plans Rs 454 Crore 61-Km Corridor Along Najafgarh Drain To Improve Connectivity

(MENAFN- KNN India) New Delhi, Aug 31 (KNN) The Delhi government plans to develop an approximately 61-kilometre corridor along the Najafgarh drain to reduce traffic congestion and improve connectivity across the city, officials said.

The Public Works Department (PWD) is preparing to appoint a private consultant to conduct a feasibility study and prepare a detailed project plan. The project was first announced by the government in February.

“The stretch is heavily congested due to a mix of slow-moving vehicles and cross movements during peak and non-peak hours, causing heavy traffic. We plan to hire a consultant to conduct a feasibility study before the project starts,” a PWD official said, as reported by PTI.

Corridor to Connect Key Roads

According to the proposed plan, roads will be developed along both sides of the drain from Chhawla to Basaidarapur over 27.415 km, creating a combined stretch of 54.83 km. Another 5.94-km, two-lane road is proposed on the left bank between Jhatikra Bridge and Chhawla Bridge.

The official said,“The primary objective of the project is to reduce congestion on major roads and cut travel time and fuel consumption, and lower vehicular emissions. The corridor will provide inter-connectivity with major roads including Outer Ring Road, Inner Ring Road, Shivaji Marg, Pankha Road, UER-II (connecting to NH-9 Rohtak Road), Najafgarh Road and other key routes,” as quoted by PTI.

He added that the total cost of the project is estimated at Rs 454 crore.

Focus on Mobility and Environment

The proposed corridor will be about 7 metres wide and will include separate tracks for walking, jogging and cycling. A new bridge near the Dwarka Metro Depot is also proposed to improve movement along the corridor.

“Landscaping and tree plantation will be undertaken along the corridor. Where required, new boundary walls will be constructed and damaged walls repaired,” according to the project.

Officials said the feasibility study will also examine sections where Delhi Metro rail corridors intersect or form part of the proposed alignment.

The consultant's assessment will determine the project's feasibility and help finalise its design and implementation plan before construction begins.
