John Galliano Withdraws From Met Costume Institute Exhibition

(MENAFN- USA Art News) British fashion designer John Galliano has withdrawn his planned exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute. The exhibition was scheduled to coincide with the 2027 Met Gala, but faced renewed criticism over Galliano's past racist behavior.

A French court convicted Galliano in February 2011 for antisemitic and anti-Asian hate speech directed at a French couple, and later for antisemitic slurs against a woman in October 2011. He received a total fine of €6,000 ( $6,962 ). Additionally, The Sun, a British tabloid, circulated a video showing Galliano declaring,“I love Hitler,” leading to Dior dismissing him as creative director in March 2011.

When the Met announced the exhibition, titled John Galliano: Horizons, in July, a fresh wave of backlash emerged. Critics included prominent Met donor Alice Tisch and New York politician Brad Lander, both of whom urged the museum to cancel the show. Galliano, who previously held roles at couture houses like Givenchy and Maison Margiela, issued a statement on August 31 confirming his decision.
